about

The Flower of Danaveen

Norah Ryan’s painful story shows the dangers to which an innocent girl is exposed, through ignorance of the fundamental facts of existence.
Shortly after moving to Glasgow, Norah gave birth to a baby boy. Unable to hold up a job, she eventually became a prostitute to provide for her child. Tragically however, he became fatally ill and died. With not much left to live for, Norah was left to drift the streets of Glasgow, until one evening she was set upon by thugs and left to die, where Gourock Ellen found her.
Norah was described by Dermod as an early delicate flower which he had once found killed by the cold snows on the uplands of Danaveen, “ere yet the second warmth of the spring had had come to gladden the bare hills of Donegal”.
