about

Sandy MacDonald of Skye/The Great Exodus

Sandy was an old man that worked as a navvy with Dermod, though he was probably only in his forties. He had a hacking cough and was merely a bag of bones but laboured hard with his fellow workmates. One evening in the winter, he declared that he longed to see his home of Skye once more before he left this world for good. Moleskin Joe got a money collection together from all the other navvies (by force and otherwise!) and gave Sandy the money needed to go home. With plans to go home the next day, he went to bed with a happy heart but alas, passed away in his sleep.
The following summer, the squad were given their final pay and told that their services were no longer needed. Together they set off down the mountains towards Glasgow, old and young alike, “an army of scarecrows, ragged, unkempt scarecrows of civilisation”, in search of the next job.
